What to do and see in County Mayo

The magnificent Croagh Patrick stands tall and proad overlooking the quaint Westport town. The mountain itself is a place of pilgrimage and has been for centuries. Today a right of passge for the locals and a rewarding 5 hour climb for trekking enthusiasts.

Foxford Woollen Mills is nestled alongside the majestic flow of the mighty River Moy and the magnificent peaks of the Ox and Nephin Mountains. It is an experience like no other. A woman by the name of Agnes Morrogh-Bernard turned her back on her life of privilege and finishing schools and joined the Sisters of Charity. At the age of 50 she came to the place that would be forever changed by her presence, Foxford Co. Mayo. She saw the mighty River Moy running through the poverty-stricken village and had an ingenious idea, to build a woollen mill powered by its waters.

Clew Bay in County Mayo has some of the most magnificent views on the island of Ireland. Local tradition states that there are "365 island in the bay... one for every day of the week". Whether this is true or not you can judge for yourself as you take in the stunning panoramic views of the bay.

The National Museum of Country life is a fabulous, free museum located only 20 minutes from Ireland West Farm Stay. It is a museum dedicated to the histoory traditions and folklore of rural Ireland and is a must visit when travelling through county Mayo.

Journey to the pretty village of Cong in County Mayo, where the 1952 Oscar-winning movie, The Quiet Man, starring John Wayne and Maureen O’Hara, was filmed. This hauntingly beautiful village is known as the floating village as it is surrounded by lakes and tranquil rivers and offers one of the most relaxing village experiences in Ireland

Westport Town is one of the most beautiful and enjoyable towns in Ireland. Nestled close to Clew Bay and overlooked by the magnificent Croagh Patrick this is a town that maintains a traditional west of Ireland feel yet has the hustle and bustle of a thriving east coast town. With shops , pubs & restauraunts a visit to Westport is a must to when travelling in Mayo.

Achill Island, located in the west of Ireland and off the coast of Mayo in the Atlantic Ocean is connected to the mainland by a land bridge. It contains some of the most dramatic coastal road trips in Ireland and is a favourite for visitors travelling along the Wild Atlantic Way. As well as stunning beaches and magnificent cliff faces it also steeped in tradition and history.

Ballintubber Abbey was founded by King Cathal Crovdearg O’Conor – Cathal Mór of the wine-red hand. He was of the royal race of the O’Connors, King of Connacht and notable patrons of the arts. A visit to the abbey today is a fasinating trip deep into the history of the west of Ireland.

The story of Knock began on the evening of the 21st of August 1879 when an apparition was spotted on the gable end of the small church. Throughout the years, there are have been many milestones which have seen this small rural village grow to become an international pilgrimage destination.
